Hi all! Here I am again, after a few months of silence, to share with you the post n° 100! Enjoy it!

I quote the author: “Working on the sexual act meant going all the way-as close as possible to the coitus- showing the action in itself without ever crossing the boundary of the inappropriate detail. I started off asking myself about photographic recording of sexual act. For me, photography labours under a big handicap, compared to sculpture or painting, in that it can be very realistic- Courbet’s L’origine du monde for example- without being pornographic. In the end if a sculptor or a painter veers off into pornography it’s because he’s chosen to do so. In order to resolve the problem of voyeurism in relation to a photograph of a couple making love, I chose to work on time. Or perhaps I should say duration. Stretching out the exposure time to the duration of the coitus allowed me to avoid sliding into what might have seemed like pornography, thought in fact that I really don’t care. I wanted to give another vision of sexual relationship- a vision on the threshold of the unconscious.
Yes I materialised the sexual act and gave it a face without there being a film; because even if both mediums use time and negatives, the fact is that with traditional techniques a film exits only in a process . The movements are captured and transcribed, stage after stage. This photographs, on the other hand, were playing with time. They brought together the different stages of coitus in an image. I folded the begining on to the end, along with the middle. I compacted time, so that the different moments of the act were expressed only by the clear an the hazy. And unlike films, which for me are too directive, at least for this kind of object, my photographs impose nothing-not even an interpretation. Looking at my images, I’m not trying to re-create scenes in my mind. My interpretation’s angled towards the hazy parts, which I know represent rapid movements, and clear part, which result from slower movements. I just try to decipher the rythms. The feeling, for their part, aren’t accessible to me. I know that some people project themselves into the images and imagine the positions of the sexual relationship, but for me they’re mistaken. Everything overlaps, so no one can really tell what happened. And that’s what I like : people can interpret the image any way they like.
I only suggest what happens. I’ve come right up to the limit : I show without really showing ! By compacting time, I don’t give a false image of reality, or even use any artifice. I « notify » a reality. I create a sort of temporal « filter », in the sense that I give another reading of time, using the properities of the photographic medium. And people can take the filter any way they want to. I don’t like clear-cut, obvious images. And that why I avoid offering anything explicit. Being categorical isn’t what I’m after. I always prefer what’s suggested- what’s proposed, not imposed.”
