Gianluca Gamberini was born in 1979 in Bologna, Italy. He now lives and works in Paris.
This is the second time I talk about Gianluca’s photos, needless to say it is because I find them very interesting, in this case mainly for the “unexpected” subject and the care of his representation. “Tokio Ga” has been showed during the “Rencontre de la Photographie” de Arles 2013 in the section “Voies Off ” and it will be show at Paris Photo 2013 at Galerie du Jour Agnes B stand.
Questa è la seconda volta che parlo delle foto di Gianluca Gamberini, inutile dire che è perché le trovo molto interessanti, in questo caso soprattutto per il soggetto “inaspettato” e per la cura con cui è stato rappresentato. “Tokio Ga” è stato esposto quest’anno ai “Rencontre de la Photographie” di Arles, nella sezione “Voies Off” e sarà esposto a Paris Photo 2013 nello stand della galleria di Jour Agnes B.

IN THE INTERSTICE – A text by Xavier Gonzales – Back from Tokyo where he has been spending time as an artist in residence, Gianluca Gamberini gives us a very personal vision of the city and its vernacular architecture. He catches the paradoxes, the abrupt passages from high density to semi-rurality. And behind the apparent chaos generated by the permanent compromise between the desire for tradition and the acceptance of modernity, he finds a delicate impassibility, a minute yet sufficient distance between each thing. Gianluca Gamberini’s background is in films and he has constructed his new photo series along the lines of an urban tracking shot, guided by chance and intuition. His progress from place to place led him to discoveries, situations, and sequences inspired by Wim Wenders, who in turn inspired his title, Tokyo-ga – ‘Order (elegance) in Tokyo’.
Tornato da Tokyo, dove ha trascorso del tempo in una residenza per artisti, Gianluca Gamberini ci dà una visione molto personale della città e della sua architettura vernacolare. Afferra i paradossi, i bruschi passaggi da alta densità a semi-ruralità. Dietro l’apparente caos generato dal compromesso permanente tra il desiderio per la tradizione e l’accettazione della modernità, egli trova un impassibilità delicata, una piccola ma sufficiente distanza tra tutte le cose. Il background di Gianluca sono i film, forse per questo ha costruito la sua nuova serie di foto lungo le linee di una carrellata urbana, guidata dal caso e l’intuizione. Il progresso da un luogo ad un altro lo ha portato a scoperte, situazioni e sequenze ispirate da Wim Wenders, che a sua volta ha ispirato il suo titolo, Tokyo-ga – ‘Ordine (eleganza) a Tokyo’.
Gianluca Gamberini’s work incorporates the two Japanese expressions for space and nothingness: Mu and Ma. The concept of nothingness, which is closely bound up with Zen Buddhism, is deeply rooted in Japanese culture and is an integral part of everything. The concept of Mu is found in the town planning of Tokyo, where the centre is occupied by the Imperial City, the empty matrix responsible for the founding of the city and into which no one may penetrate. One of the largest megalopolises in the world grew up around this symbolically empty centre. Mu is also present in architecture. The effect of the sliding panels known as shoji and fusuma in the traditional habitat is to materialise the presence of nothingness. They are opened and closed according to the season or the occasion, to join or divide rooms and to merge with a natural, built and codified landscape.
Il lavoro di Gianluca incorpora le due espressioni giapponesi per lo spazio e il nulla: Mu e Ma. Il concetto del nulla, che è strettamente connesso con il Buddismo Zen, è profondamente radicato nella cultura giapponese ed è parte integrante del tutto. Il concetto di Mu si trova nell’urbanistica di Tokyo, dove il centro è occupato dalla città imperiale, la matrice vuota responsabile della Fondazione della città e in cui nessuno può penetrare. Una delle più grandi megalopoli nel mondo è cresciuta intorno a questo centro simbolicamente vuoto. MU è presente anche in architettura. L’effetto dei pannelli scorrevoli conosciuto come shoji e fusuma negli habitat tradizionali serve a materializzare la presenza del nulla. Esse vengono aperte e chiuse secondo la stagione o l’occasione, per unire o dividere le camere e per fondersi con un naturale, costruito e codificato paesaggio.
The construction of nothingness is ubiquitous in all the Japanese arts: it is to be found for example in flower arranging (ikebana), calligraphy, and cooking. Mu is the art of living in harmony with nothingness; it gives breathing space to any work of art. Ma, on the other hand, is the ‘in-between’ space, an idea of the interstice between nothing and everything, between nothingness and that which is. Ma designates the interval, the space that joins. It covers the idea of keeping a certain distance between bodies, the right distance for example in martial arts or in the ritual of greeting. It represents the distance necessary for two bodies to operate in space.It symbolises the two matching qualities of union and harmony.
La costruzione del nulla è onnipresente in tutte le arti giapponesi: essa si trova per esempio nell’arte della disposizione dei fiori recisi (ikebana), nella calligrafia e nella cottura. MU è l’arte di vivere in armonia con il nulla; dà respiro a qualsiasi opera d’arte. Ma, d’altra parte, è lo spazio ‘intermedio’, un’idea dell’interstizio tra niente e tutto, tra nulla e ciò che è. Designa l’intervallo, lo spazio che unisce. Esso copre l’idea di mantenere una certa distanza tra i corpi, la giusta distanza per esempio nelle arti marziali o nel rituale del saluto. Esso rappresenta la distanza necessaria per due corpi di operare nello spazio. Simboleggia le due corrispondenti qualità di Unione e Armonia.
Mu is present in Gianluca Gamberini’s decision to explore a particular territory in the manner of a situationist dérive (drift). His area of operation is marked out by the Yamamote underground railway line, which runs round the primordial urban void of the Imperial Palace. Ma, on the other hand, is present in his choice of subject, the interstice as an axis of dissymmetry. With this theme he has been able to create a series of urban portraits based on dyads juxtaposing opposite and complementary principles in neighbour pairs.
MU è presente nella decisione di Gianluca Gamberini di esplorare un territorio particolare alla maniera di un situazionalista dérive (derivato). La zona di operazione è segnata dalla linea ferroviaria metropolitana Yamamote, che corre intorno il vuoto urbano primordiale del Palazzo imperiale. Ma, d’altra parte, è presente nella sua scelta del soggetto, l’interstizio come un asse di asimmetria. Con questo tema è stato in grado di creare una serie di ritratti urbani basati su diadi, giustapponendo principi opposti e complementari in coppie vicine.
In Tokyo, the roads are made up of houses that are very close together but do not touch. They are separated by a gap that acts as air space and anti-earthquake expansion joint. These strangely designed party walls give rise to a host of obscure interstices used for such purposes as ventilation, air conditioning or for housing cables. And yet the gap between each building links the often very different personalities and backgrounds of the invisible occupants who live there at such surprisingly close quarters.
A Tokyo, le strade sono costituite da case che sono molto vicine tra loro, ma non toccano. Esse sono separate da un divario che funge da spazio aereo e come giunto di dilatazione anti-terremoto. Queste mura stranamente progettate danno origine ad una miriade di interstizi oscuri utilizzati per scopi come ventilazione, aria condizionata o per alloggiamento cavi. Eppure il divario tra ogni edificio collega personalità spesso molto diverse così come fanno da sfondo agli occupanti invisibili che vivono in questi quartieri sorprendentemente chiusi.
