I believe “Closer to God” is an exceptional piece of work. I reproduce hereby part of the author’s statement. I think it’s self-explanatory and therefore there is no need to add anything to understand the scope: “Closer to God” is a series of anthropological fictions that are a fragment of the on going Ascension project. These are images of what Dante referred to as the virtuous pagans. Those born without the light of God and whose only sin it is, to live without the faith in God. And so they spend eternity saturated by the light of human reason, eternally in the knowledge that they will be forever without God. This fragment of the series, seeks to privilege the surface of both the sitter, and the surface of the image, These fictions, these strange physiologies, are based on the paintings of Cranach and Grunewald, drowing a line though Da Vinci’s grotesques to the present day practice of photographic portraiture, to question what is real. Obviously manipulated (these images), the hand of the Artist is exposed, a portrait perhaps or a confession?” Enjoy!

Closer to God” è a mio parere un lavoro eccezionale. Riporto qui parte dello statement dell’autore, al quale non c’è nulla da aggiungere per comprendere il progetto: “Closer to god” (Più vicini a Dio) è una serie di finzioni antropologiche e fa parte di un progetto in corso d’opera chiamato “Ascension” (Ascensione). Queste immagini sono un parallelo di quelli che Dante nel suo inferno indicava come pagani virtuosi. Quelli nati senza la luce di Dio e il cui solo peccato è stato vivere senza la fede in Dio. Essi passano l’eternità avvolti dalla luce della ragione umana, eternamente nella consapevolezza di essere senza Dio. Questi racconti di fantasia, queste strane fisionomie, sono basate sui dipinti di Cranach e Grunewald, disegnando una linea dal grottesco di Da Vinci fino alla pratica del ritratto fotografico, mettendo in discussione ciò che oggi è reale. In immagini ovviamente manipolate come queste, la mano dell’artista è esposta: si tratta dunque di un ritratto o di una confessione?
