The work of Julia Krahn quests for the permeability of the sight between the artist’s and the observer’s identity. Daily objects, symbols, traces of the past are here redefined through the photographic images. Her works are therefore characterized by a fluid ambiguity: the artist is interested on crystallizing the fragments of a secret and real private and transforming it from a liquid to a solid state, more than just narrating a story or reporting the passing of time. The artist research reflects upon lost and unbalanced values in society, family, and religion up to pointing her camera on images that recalls Christian icons. She creates images that underline the contrast with traditional symbols and works on the inner conflicts staging pairs of opposites, at times making self portraits with the automatic shutter release using her own body. In Krahn’s work importance is equally given to image and format on a range of work that is developed on different scales and supports creating an overall feeling that, from time to time, drives the observer in new perceptions of the image. Her giant wallpapers with all the strength of an image without supports, glass or frames overbear the observer, physically overlook him, acquiring pictorial features that like big frescos breaks the distance between the observer and the ambient. At the same time the artist combines the space with small unique pieces as the metal frame cammeos which to the contrary of the wallpapers set up a face to face dialogue with the viewer involving him with the preciousness of the object and of its perception. Likewise memories is a series of photo/object mounted on a thick acrylic glass which acts as lens to the image leading the mind to the dimension of the souvenirs. In this context the artist inserts also more classical formats as framed pictures realized with more traditional supports. Enjoy.

Il lavoro di Julia Krahn si interroga sulla permeabilità dello sguardo tra identità dell’artista e dello spettatore. Gli oggetti quotidiani, i simboli, le tracce del passato sono così ridefiniti attraverso l’immagine fotografica in opere che si caratterizzano in questo senso per una fluidità ambigua: più che il racconto dello scorrere del tempo o la costruzione di una storia, all’artista interessa cristallizzare, cioè trasformare da stato liquido a solido, i frammenti di un reale privato e segreto. La ricerca artistica della Krahn passa attraverso la riflessione sui valori perduti o sbilanciati della società, della famiglia, della religione, fino a portare l’obiettivo su immagini che riconducono alle icone Cristiane, lavorando in alcuni casi con l’autoscatto, creando immagini che sottolineano il contrasto con i simboli tradizionali e lavorando sui conflitti attraverso la messa in scena di coppie di opposti. Nell’opera della Krahn altrettanta forza che all’immagine viene data al formato dei lavori che si sviluppano su scale e supporti differenti creando un gioco che di volta in volta porta l’osservatore a una nuova percezione dell’immagine. I suoi giganti wallpaper sovrastano lo spettatore con tutta la potenza di un’immagine senza supporti, vetri o cornici, immagini che dominano fisicamente, immagini che prendono acquisiti pittorici e che, come grandi affreschi, tolgono ogni distanza tra il fruitore e l’ambiente. In uno stesso contesto lo sguardo viene poi chiamato e portato su piccoli pezzi unici: sia la volta dei cammei in cornici di metallo che stabiliscono un dialogo one to one, intimo, col fruitore, richiamandolo alla preziosità dell’oggetto e della sua percezione; o sia la volta di memories, foto/oggetti montati su uno spesso strato di plexiglas che fa da lente a immagini che riportano alla dimensione del ricordo. In questo percorso, passando anche attraverso formati più classici l’artista inserisce fotografie realizzate su supporti più tradizionali quali vere e proprie cornici che contengono l’immagine. Nicol Vizioli is a young Italian photographer and painter. She was born in Rome and currently lives in London. All the galleries of her website show projects with a great aesthetic taste. Her portraits have a highly emotional sense, and they are surely the product of a very dared mind. The project hereby shown is called “Anti-Fashion Manifesto” and, as this title suggests, it is a series of portraits of women with characteristics far from what is normally acclaimed by the fashion industry. However it is somehow the imperfections and even the shady color of the skin of these women (almost ill I could say) that provide this work with a sort of humanity. This is definitely a project I had to go deeper into and one to which I feel I belong to.

Nicol Vizioli è una giovane fotografa e pittrice italiana, nata a Roma, che ora vive e lavora a Londra. Tutte le gallerie del suo sito presentano progetti di grande gusto estetico, i suoi ritratti hanno una forte carica emotiva e sono senza dubbio il risultato di una mente molto audace. Il progetto qui presentato si chiama “Anti-Fashion Manifesto”, e come ci suggerisce il titolo, si tratta di una serie di ritratti di donne con caratteristiche ben lontante da quelle osannate dal mondo della moda. Eppure i difetti, le imperfezioni, il colore della pelle di queste donne (quasi malato oserei dire) ne fanno un lavoro pieno di umanità; un lavoro che non posso fare a meno di indagare e a cui, in qualche modo, sento di appartenere.
