Born in 1970 into a Hubei province farming family. At the age of 19, like millions of other chinese young people, Li Wei migrated to Beijing.
Li Wei’s compelling but provocative performance art pieces continue to ingeniously explore the multiple realities of China’s complex contemporary society within the staged fantasies that he creates. Some of his photos are indeed humorous, while others are disconcerting, but all provide fascinating insights into both the artist himself and into China today. He says about his work: “I think I’m trying to express the real world surrounds us. That’s why I lifted myself high, to experience the real, though the result is ‘to make the impossible possible.’ Yes, the social issue is what I care, I shot in construction sites, in rural places… that’s what I want to show how fast the economy developed in China and at the same time how dangerous and unstable it is.”
Le avvincenti ma provocatrici performance di Li Wei continuano a esplorare ingegnosamente le molteplici realtà della complessa società contemporanea cinese all’interno delle rappresentazioni fantastiche che egli crea. Alcune delle sue foto sono davvero divertenti, mentre altre sono sconcertanti, ma tutte ci mostrano le affascinanti intuizioni dell’artista e della Cina di oggi. Questo è quanto l’artista dice del suo lavoro: “Penso di star cercando di esprimere il mondo reale che ci circonda. E’ per questo che mi sono sollevato verso alto, per sperimentare il reale, anche se il risultato è quello di ‘rendere possibile l’impossibile’. Sì, la questione sociale è ciò che mi interessa, ho girato in cantieri edili, in luoghi rurali…quello che voglio mostrare è come l’economia si sta sviluppando velocemente in Cina, e allo stesso tempo quanto pericolosa ed insostenibile sia.”
